Uganda: Education as a Gateway to Freedom – The Hard Facts
In Uganda, the path through secondary school is a steep climb that only a few manage to finish. The system is heavily privatized and barely affordable for many families. In a country where almost every second person is a child or youth, every school placement is a chance for survival and the gateway to a better future.
The reality of the school system:
S4 (O-Level): This is the first major crossroad. Only 30% of students reach this level. Yet, this certificate is the vital gateway to professions such as nursing or teaching.
S6 (A-Level): Here, the air becomes even thinner. Only 15% reach this goal, which is a prerequisite for university degrees in medicine or law.
Financial barriers: Since the system is privately oriented, families often have to make massive financial sacrifices to enable this opportunity for their children.
What we achieve at Philadelphia: Our goal is to open this gateway wide, even for orphans and children from less privileged families.
